The Online Teaching Studio

The Virtual Studio

Due to the Pandemic, in the best interest of keeping everyone - students, friends, families and the wider community - healthy and safe in the best possible way, my Teaching Studio has adapted to a fully on-line platform for making and teaching music virtually.

A New Musical World

We can look forward to a “new musical world” with the exploration of new and exciting resources and methods that will continue to help us experience the joy of making music, together, and on our own!

Tech stuff

In conjunction with using ZOOM, I will be able to flip to extra cameras, that will allow us to “get really close” to one another - so you might see a view like this:

8 Tips for Lessons

To get the most out of your on-line learning experience, please read up on these tips:

1) Choose the device or laptop/computer you wish to use for your lesson - for visual learners, larger screens are better for learning.

2) Have the free ZOOM app downloaded and updated. Ann will email you a link that you can save and click on every time you come for a lesson or recital. You will be admitted to a secure, private waiting room, and then be admitted, at the start of your lesson. Ann can help you optimize your settings at the first lesson. Go to zoom.us

3) Where possible, position your device from the side and slightly back to show the profile, arms, hands, and keyboard or strings. Consider creative uses of ironing boards and furniture to create a stand for your device.

4) To be clearly seen, keep the light - either natural or from a lamp, behind or to the side of your device.

5) Be sure to have your device fully charged before a lesson, and/or use a charging cable.

6) For a more reliable internet connection, use an ethernet cable.

7) Prepare all lesson books and downloaded materials prior to the lesson, including a pencil with an eraser.

8) Keep the lesson room free from distractions, such as siblings, the television, background noise, and pets - unless they’re like Johnnie (below) and like to sleep beside you.

With ZOOM, I will be able to share documents, sheet music, video and audio files from my computer to your device, and have access to a “whiteboard” feature, for annotating and writing music composition ideas and other creative activities.

New Music Adventures

In the spring of this year, we had to very quickly move to remote learning and music making - using the resources that we had on hand. With all the advances that educators, musicians and technologists have since put into place, we have even greater opportunities to truly explore new frontiers in music learning and performance. I’m looking forward to this “Whole New World”, and to have you and your family and friends, part of it. Thumbs up!

ps. “High 5” someone in your household if you can spot the “real live” mouse who made a virtual appearance!

At the Studio, I will be using a microphone and external speakers to allow for the best audio quality for instrumental playing, as well as for listening.
